Two concerts were recorded at The Pizza Express Jazz Club in London's Soho. These have been combined on this new CD and illustrate the appeal and depth of talent within the Peter King Quartet.Peter's stalwart collaborators for these concerts were as ever Steve Melling on piano, Jeremy Brown on bass and Stephen Keogh on drums. Arnie Somogi stood in for Jeremy on bass for the second recording. The music captured here shows the range of the Quartet with compositions from Wayne Shorter whose 'Footlights' provides the title track, Mal Waldron's lyrical 'Soul Eyes', McCoy Tyner's beautiful 'Search for Peace', Chick Corea's energetic 'Inner Space' and Victor Feldman's dynamic 'Joshua'. Steve Melling contributes with two tracks, 'Sue's Good News' and 'In a Monochrome'. This is the only track that has been previously released on Miles Music and here benefits from the live context. 'Sue's Good News' is just the kind of easy going blues you would want to start off a very special evening, listening to one of Britain's premier jazz artists, performing with his regular musicians. Indeed all these tracks show the quartet at it's best with Peter's inspiration and generosity at the centre. If you haven't had the good fortune to see Peter King playing live then this is the CD to hear his unique genius for yourself. If you have, then it will be a recording to treasure, in helping to keep fresh one of life's memorable experiences.
